Honey Dipper Hat - Knitting Pattern

In keeping with the bee theme of my designs, I came up with this chunky knit hat that looks like a giant honey dipper. It's made with soft, squishy Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, and true to the yarn's name, the beanie knits up very fast. Despite the fact that it's the dog days of summer here, and it's way too hot for a beanie, it was fun to photograph the hat in my garden with my bees' favorite flowers, and the fruits of their pollination.

1 ball Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn (106 yds) - Butterscotch
1 ball Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn (106 yds) - Fisherman (for multicolored pom pom)
9mm circular 16" knitting needles
10mm circular 16" knitting needles
10mm double pointed needles (as needed)
Stitch Markers
Large yarn needle or crochet hook to weave in ends

This beginner-friendly chunky hat is knit in the round, from the bottom up, in Butterscotch, beginning with a 1x1 rib brim, and then switching to a 4-row pattern repeat with 3 rows knit, and 1 row purled. The hat can be worked entirely on double pointed needles, or by starting with circular needles until the decreases and then transferring to double pointed needles. A jumbo pom pom is added in Butterscotch and Fisherman.

Finished Dimensions:
Circumference: 18 inches (hat is sized for adults & teenagers)
Height: 9 inches
Pom pom: 5 inches

Definitions:
K: Knit
P: Purl
K2Tog: Knit 2 stitches together
Sts: Stitches

Cast on 38 stitches, using 9mm needles. Use either 1x1 Rib or Long Tail cast on. Place beginning of round marker, and join in the round.

Rows 1 - 6: K 1, P 1 around.

Switch to 10mm needles for hat body.

Rows 7 - 9: Knit.
Row 10: Purl.
Rows 11-22: Repeat rows 7-10.
Rows 23-24: Knit

Begin the decrease, continuing in the same knit 3 rows/purl 1 row pattern. Switch to double point needles as needed.

Row 25: K2tog, K 17, K2tog, K to end of round. (36 sts)
Row 26: Purl.
Row 27: *K2tog, K 4, rep from * around. (30 sts)
Row 28: Knit.
Row 29: *K2tog, K 3, rep from * around. (24 sts)
Row 30: Purl around.
Row 31: *K2tog, K 2, rep from * around. (18 sts)
Row 32: *K2tog, K 1, rep from * around. (12 sts)

Do not bind off. Cut long tail and thread onto tapestry needle. Pull tail through all stitches, and remove needles. Pull tightly like a drawstring to close the top of the hat, then tie it off securely on the inside of the hat. Weave in ends.

Make or add jumbo pom pom. For this hat, I made a pom pom using the colors Butterscotch & Fisherman, and a jumbo pom pom maker.
